Fun at the Black Boaters Summit

In 1996, a major yacht charter company asked Paul Mixon , a sailor and member of the National Brotherhood of Skiers , if he would help them market charter yacht vacations to African American snow skiers.

In 1997, the first Annual Black Boaters Summit hosted a flotilla of ten yachts and one hundred participants. In 2005, Honey Let's Travel hosted twenty eight yachts and over two hundred sailing participants.

Honey Let's Travel's niche market are African Americans, most of whom are non boaters --- and many who also do not swim. While the event targets African Americans, everyone is most welcome.

The event is held each year in the British Virgin Islands . The yachts are chartered "bareboat" where everyone helps with the cooking, cleaning and sailing of the vessels. Except for our "Crewed Yachts" the vessels are captained by African American men and women who can skipper a boat of forty feet or larger.

Black Boaters Summit charters its yachts from The Moorings , VOYAGE Charters , and Virgin Traders Motor Yacht Charter Company ; all located on Tortola, BVI.

Last August, National Geographic chartered its own boats and filmed our event in the British Virgin Islands. Black Boaters Summit has been featured in the December, 2007 issue of National Geographic Magazine and in Ameriprise Financial 's LifeDREAMS online webisodes .
